The Magical Path of ACoA Recovery Course
You've been under a spell not of your own making—one that shapes how you think and act differently from others. This course unveils the spell's origins, its effects, and most importantly, how to break free.
Drawing on Māori legend, I introduce Waipiro—the Tāniwha protecting alcohol—as a metaphor for your journey.
Five transformative quests await:
- Understand the spell casters
- Recognize how the spell controls you
- Discover your true drives
- Rewrite your internal rules
- Release inherited violence
Worksheets—magic counterspells—are scattered throughout. Use them wisely: reflect, explore, transform. Words, pictures, symbols—whatever speaks to your soul.
Remember: this course is a step, not the complete answer. Seek support, talk to professionals, join communities. Your healing is yours to claim.
Your counter spell starts here.

How the Course Works
Within this course, the nature of the spell is uncovered in rich detail. You will see how the spell was cast. You will see the effects it’s had on you. You will also see the way to break the spell within these lessons.
-
The Five Quests
You will complete five quests, each with their own tasks. It will be painful at times, and you will cry many tears. But it will be worth every minute. We are going to use the powerful counter spell to set you free.
-
The Four Steps to Counter the Spell
In each lesson of this course is an aspect of the spell you may not have considered before. Each lesson also lights the way forward, using all four steps of the counter spell. We will uncover, bridge, strengthen, and self-nourish in all five quests.

My Story
When she was born, her mother, Leonie the Strong looked at her with love in her heart. The love spilled out into her eyes and was upon her face for all to see. Her father Kevin the Unsure, loved her also and showed his love by working hard, for that was all he knew.

-
Quest Two - Introduction Continued
In this section we learn how the spell has made us act and how we can learn new ways to act.

-
Quest Two:Task Two - Part One determine your new roles
Now we can begin to work with some new roles
-

-
Third Quest: Know what Drives you
-
Quest Three - Introduction
This quest comprises five tasks, some small, some large. Each task will bring you a step closer to becoming your unfettered self. Casting off the spell and creating a counterspell is exhilarating, and can be terrifying. There are monsters and Taniwha on the way. They do not want you to succeed. But you will succeed, because you have unimaginable strength.
-
Quest Three: Task One - Part One - Know Your Core Values
In the next task you are going to examine your central organising factor. This may sound like a scary piece of jargon, but it’s ok, I’m going to explain. This means knowing what drives you; understanding your values.
-
Quest Three: Task One - Part Two - Measure Your Values
Now we are going to work out how you measure those values. This is something I learned to do recently, and it revolutionised my life (thank you Mark Manson, my idol). When the measures we use to value our experiences and interactions meet our expectations, we are happy and loved. When they don’t, life is crappy and hard.
-
Quest Three: Task Two - Ethical Imperatives
When you were growing up, you learned ethics from those around you. This started at home when you were little. Ethics take on a different flavour in most families with addictions.
-
Quest Three: Task Three - Setting Goals
This is where we crate tangible goals so we can reverse the spell set upon us.
-
Quest Three: Task Four - Define Healthy Relationships
We might be used to giving more than the other person, but it doesn’t have to stay like that.
-
Quest Three: Task Five - Belonging
We learn to stay because we learn what it means to belong.
-
-
Fourth Quest - Rewriting the Rules
-
Quest Four - Introduction
Rules are what keeps any society going. We need rules. Even in a family there are rules. In a family with addiction the rules become less about life and more about survival. This quest has only two tasks. I won’t lie to you, they are hard. The spell has made us unfeeling, untrusting and silent. But you are not alone.
-
Quest four - Task One: Learning to Feel - Introduction
As a child of a family with addiction, a huge part of protecting yourself is to shut down your feelings. It doesn’t have to stay this way.
-
Quest Four - Task One - Part One - Learning to Feel
Learning to regulate yourself is a very powerful part of casting the spell.
-
Quest Four - Task One - Part Two - Our Dreams
Now that you know how to recognise and own your emotions, you are going to learn the secrets of your body and mind, and what they tell you while you sleep.
-
Quest Four - Task Two - Use Your Voice and Trust
The next part of the spell we are going to break is the entwined rules of ‘don’t trust’ and ‘don’t speak’. These twin rules work together and are powerful, but once you learn what to do, you can break the spell.
-
Quest Four - Task Two - Boundaries
We learn that it’s ok to talk and trust and that this can lead to good boundary making.
-
-
Final Quest - Putting the violence to rest
-
Seeing violence for what it is
Your incredible strength allows you to see violence for what it is and what to do about it.
-
Final Quest - Creating the counterspell against violence
You can cast a counter spell. You are not six any more; your eyes are opening. How things are today are not how they were when you were a child.

Vicki-ann
I have lived this process, I still find myself in this process - thankfully less now. I know the pain of growing up with alcoholic parents and all that brings. My life story is written in lesson one as a magical story that you can take comfort from in knowing that you can have the same magic in your life.
Some of what you’ll learn
